a vision of K-12 students today!  this video provides a useful starting point to discussions on why it’s necessary to engage our students in thinking creatively in an online world.

just for fun… here’s our new UltraNetBoy theme song and video clip…

are you paying attention?  share this video with your staff, it is a great wake up call about the power of ict, and what you can be doing in schools to harness that power. do schools kill creativity?  sir ken robinson talks about the future of education generally, and the way it can limit creativity in our students.  sir ken describes the power of right brained thinking to revolutionise the way we think about education.  great video to share with your staff to encourage discussion around the purposes of education – this video will get you thinking!  how creativity is being strangled by the law!  lawrence lessig describes the growth (on the web particularly) of user generated content, and the way the law currently criminalises this creativity.  he argues for ‘common sense’ in the law (a rare idea, as he suggests!).  this video could be used to generate discussion into copyright issues – lawrence’s presentation style is also an excellent example of a brilliant use of presentation software such as powerpoint or keynote.  interesting data!  hans rosling talks about poverty and child health by using data that has developed into a fantastic online data tool called gapminder (it can be found here at gapminder.org)… if you can’t develop an integrated unit of work using this site as a starting point then perhaps it is worth considering a career other than teaching!  how NOT to do powerpoint!  comedian don mc millan talks about the dangers of using powerpoint presentations to get your message across.  this video is equally effective to use with students as it is with staff.

the video above told you how NOT to use powerpoint… this one tells you HOW to make sure your presentations are interesting and effective.  this was the keynote presentation (video) for the ‘flat classroom project’ – you can find more info about this brilliant ict-integrated project here.

a vision of students today!  michael wesch and his digital ethnography students from kansas state university surveyed one another and created an interesting video about today’s digital students.  web 2.0: the machine is us/ing us!  michael wesch’s class again… this video explains the concept of web 2.0 reasonably clearly… it is also an interesting way to show students a potential way to convey ideas using screen grabs and screen recordings.  information r/evolution!  michael wesch shows the difficulties involved in categorising, organising and using information in a connected world.  dis you know?  shift happens!  this is one version (of many) of the shift happens presentation developed by  karl fisch in 2006.  it is a great presentation to use as a starting point for discussion on how to ’shift’ your thinking to a point where you are ready to make changes to the way you teach and your students learn.

when i become a teacher!  marco torres has produced a great ‘mock-vertisement’ (i made that word up) asking educators to ‘be different’ and ‘teach different[ly]‘.

kids and handhelds!  see the impact handheld computers are having on the way students learn and apply concepts in this US school.  the software used is from GoKnow, you can find more info here.

google master plan!  a fascinating and thought provoking look at google’s plans for providing access to the ’sum of human knowledge’, and what that might mean in terms of privacy.

  1. Thanks Peter.
